The US government launched a revamped website to help taxpayers understand and claim the amounts they are eligible for under the Child Tax Credit.
The new site, childtaxcredit.gov, addresses the following points regarding the Child Tax Credit:
- Who is eligible to receive the Child Tax Credit.
- Instructions and Guidance for claiming the Child Tax Credit
- Explanations detailing how the credit does not affect your federal benefits.
The site also enables taxpayers to see how much, if any, advance payments of the child tax credit they received during the year 2021. These payments were made as part of the expansion of the Child Tax Credit under President Biden’s American Rescue Plan Act, which increased the credit to up to $3,600 per child for the year 2021, half of which was available for advance payments to eligible families who maintained their home in the US for more than half of 2021.
While the IRS has begun sending letters to families which state the amount of advance payments they have received, the IRS chief taxpayer experience officer, Ken Corbin, was quoted as saying that the amounts reported in the letter may be incorrect, especially if a family moved, or if a check was undeliverable. It is believed that the website should list the correct amounts.
